Android’s sideloading changes are getting closer as Google shares new timeline

Google has unveiled a comprehensive timeline for its Android developer verification initiative, designed to enhance the safety of sideloading applications on Android devices. While the immediate impact on users may be minimal, the forthcoming changes signal a significant shift in how apps are verified and installed.

Timeline for Android’s sideloading changes

Beginning this month, Google will initiate the rollout of a new system service across Android devices. This service will eventually verify whether an app originates from a registered developer. Users may notice this feature appearing on their devices through Google System Updates, although it will not yet influence app installations.

On September 30, 2026, the verification requirements will officially commence for users in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. This initial phase will encompass apps distributed through several prominent app stores, including:

  • Google Play
  • Samsung Galaxy Store
  • Xiaomi GetApps
  • HONOR App Market
  • OPPO App Market
  • vivo V-Appstore
  • Palm Store

Google emphasizes that the ability to sideload apps will remain intact. Power users will still have the freedom to install applications from any source they prefer. However, apps from unregistered developers will necessitate additional steps during installation, while those from verified developers should continue to install seamlessly.

For hobbyists and students, Google plans to introduce a limited-distribution developer account in August, allowing the sharing of apps with up to 20 devices without the need for a government-issued ID or developer fee. This initiative aims to foster creativity and experimentation among budding developers.

The phased rollout of these new sideloading regulations will continue throughout the rest of 2026, providing Google with ample opportunity to collect feedback from users, developers, and app store partners. The company anticipates expanding the verification requirements globally across certified Android devices in 2027, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of app security on the platform.
