Files by Google app now makes recent files easier to find than ever

Google’s Files by Google app is undergoing a refreshing transformation, introducing a carousel feature that enhances the way users interact with their recent files. This new design mirrors the familiar “Memories” format found in the Google Photos app, creating a cohesive experience across Google’s suite of applications.

What you need to know

  • Google has redesigned some elements of its popular file management app.
  • Users will be able to view their recent files in the form of a carousel, just like their Memories on the Google Photos app.
  • The new change is seen in the latest beta and some official versions of the app.

Previously, users encountered a straightforward layout featuring “Recents” and “Categories” upon opening the Files by Google app on their Android devices. The Recents tab displayed folders such as Camera, Download, Screenshots, and Documents in a grid format, offering only a brief preview of their contents. Now, this familiar section has been transformed into a visually engaging carousel, reminiscent of the Stories feature in Google Photos.

With the new carousel, recent files are showcased on rectangular cards that provide a snapshot of the file or image. Tapping on any card brings the selected item into full-screen view, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, each card is equipped with a three-dot menu, allowing users to share, send to trash, or mark files as “Starred.” The carousel accommodates up to ten cards, after which users can click on the “see all” button to explore their recent files organized by folder names.

This innovative update has been observed in the latest beta version of the Files by Google app, as well as in the official release version 1.4237.652465286.1-release. The introduction of this carousel feature not only aligns with the design principles of Google Photos but also reflects Google’s commitment to providing a seamless and consistent user experience across its platforms. As these enhancements roll out, they come at an opportune moment, coinciding with the anticipated launch of Android 15.
