Each application on a smartphone boasts its own distinctive identity, encapsulated in its unique app icon. However, this diversity can sometimes lead to a chaotic appearance on the home screen. To remedy this, Android 12 (One UI 4.0) unveiled Themed Icons (Color Palette), a feature designed to harmonize the aesthetic of app icons across the device.
Initially, users had the option to opt-in to this feature, but future updates indicate that Android will automatically generate themed app icons, a change expected to extend to Galaxy phones and tablets.
Android 16 (One UI 8.5) could force themed app icons for all apps
With the rollout of the Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 update, Google has revealed that it will automatically create themed app icons for applications whose developers have not provided their own themed designs. This shift means that developers will relinquish control over the appearance of their app’s icon if users choose to enable the themed icon feature.
When a user opts for themed icons, Android will apply a color filtering mechanism to the existing app icon, resulting in a monochromatic design that aligns with the overall theme. In light of these changes, Google has updated the Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA), which is a legally binding document necessary for app and game developers seeking to list their products on the Play Store.
Developers received an email from Google outlining these modifications to the DDA and the introduction of themeable app icons. Although Google had provided developers with a four-year window to implement themed icons, a significant number failed to do so. As a result, Google is taking proactive steps to ensure a cohesive visual experience across Android devices.
A significant update to Android 16 is anticipated by the end of this year, with these enhancements likely to be available on Galaxy phones and tablets through the forthcoming One UI 8.5 update. The Galaxy S26 series is expected to be the first Samsung lineup to feature One UI 8.5, potentially introducing themed icons for all applications and enhancing the visual appeal of the user interface.
