In a significant development for wearable technology, Google is set to introduce Gemini support to Wear OS smartwatches, effectively replacing the existing Google Assistant. This transition raises questions about whether Gemini will offer groundbreaking new features or merely refresh the familiar functionalities of its predecessor.
Back in March, Google outlined its ambitious plan to fully transition to Gemini, indicating that the new AI would first replace Assistant on Android phones before making its way to tablets, Android Auto, headphones, Nest speakers, Google TV, and, of course, smartwatches. With more details anticipated in the coming months, the excitement around Gemini is palpable.
Recent insights from 9to5Google, which decompiled Google APKs from version 1.18.x of the Assistant app, shed light on how Gemini will operate in comparison to Assistant. The findings suggest that the update may be more of a straightforward app enhancement rather than a radical overhaul.
As for the Pixel 9a, it boasts a Tensor G4 flagship chip, yet its on-device AI capabilities are somewhat limited due to the 8GB of RAM. In contrast, the Pixel Watch 3, with its 2GB of RAM and older Arm Cortex cores, highlights the challenges Gemini may face in outperforming Assistant’s existing features simply through a name change.
There is potential for improved interaction between the Pixel Watch and other applications through Gemini extensions. However, the prospect of experiencing true Gemini Live-style conversations on a smartwatch seems distant—at least without significantly draining the battery.
Looking ahead, there is hope that future iterations of the Pixel Watch will showcase enhanced Gemini capabilities, especially as Qualcomm is expected to release a new Wear OS chip this year, promising greater on-device AI functionality. For the time being, Google’s priority remains on ensuring Gemini operates effectively on current Android watches, which are constrained by their hardware limitations, before unveiling any innovative AI features with the anticipated Pixel Watch 4 and Wear OS 6.
