Generative AI Chatbot: Gemini to Support More Android Apps

Google has begun the process of enhancing its Gemini chatbot, which is set to replace Assistant on a variety of Android devices. While the initial rollout has commenced, the functionality of Gemini has been somewhat limited due to the absence of necessary extensions for various apps and services. Consequently, Google’s Assistant has continued to manage many tasks. However, this situation is evolving as the company starts to distribute the required extensions.

During the I/O 2024 event, Google showcased several of these extensions, although it did not provide a specific timeline for their release. Recent updates from Google Workspace applications, including Keep, Tasks, and Calendar, suggest that Gemini support may be on the horizon.

How will Gemini work with other Google apps?

Android Authority has successfully activated some of these features prior to their official rollout. In a recent test, the outlet prompted Gemini to create notes and lists within the Keep app. The chatbot demonstrated its ability to manage notes effectively, allowing users to add or remove items from lists. Beyond these more intricate commands, Gemini can also perform basic actions, such as retrieving and opening notes.

The entire interaction occurs within a floating window, mirroring the experience users have when utilizing Gemini with other applications. Additionally, it seems that users will be shown related notes before finalizing their actions, although immediate processing of requests may also be an option.

In addition to the enhancements for the Keep app, a new extension for Tasks has been unveiled. Once Gemini support is fully implemented, users will be able to create reminders and tasks seamlessly. Similar to the Keep app, users will have the capability to view and manage their task lists within the Tasks application.

As for the Calendar app, Gemini integration will allow users to create events with designated dates and times or edit existing meetings through simple voice prompts. Basic commands and actions will remain accessible as well.

Gemini is coming to more Google apps

Beyond the Workspace applications, Gemini is also set to be integrated into Google Home and the stock phone/dialer app. With the forthcoming Home support, users will be able to manage their connected smart home devices directly through Gemini, eliminating the need for Assistant to handle these tasks. Similarly, actions typically performed by Assistant on the phone app will transition to the chatbot.

While an official launch date for these Gemini integrations remains unannounced, the presence of certain components suggests that Google may soon provide updates regarding their activation.
