Google appeals ruling regarding third-party app stores on Google Play

The ongoing legal battle surrounding third-party app stores on Google Play has taken another turn, as Google has officially filed an appeal against a recent ruling by Judge Donato. This decision mandates that Google permit developers to list their own app stores within the Google Play Store, a significant shift in the platform’s operational landscape.

Google’s Appeal Against Third-Party App Stores Ruling

Judge Donato’s ruling stems from a lawsuit initiated by Epic Games in 2020, which has now culminated in a requirement for Google to allow third-party app stores on its platform. Currently, while Android users can access various third-party app stores through sideloading—such as Aurora Store and F-Droid—these options are not available directly via the Google Play Store. Some manufacturers, like Samsung, have their own pre-installed app stores, such as the Galaxy Store, but this ruling would broaden the scope for developers across the board.

In light of the judge’s decision, Google swiftly announced its intention to appeal. Although no further comments were provided at the time of the official filing, the company had previously articulated its concerns regarding the implications of this ruling.

Concerns Over Privacy and Security

Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google’s Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, expressed apprehension about the potential risks associated with this ruling. She stated, “As we have already stated, these changes would put consumers’ privacy and security at risk, make it harder for developers to promote their apps, and reduce competition on devices.”

Mulholland further elaborated that while the changes may align with Epic’s interests, they could lead to a series of unintended consequences detrimental to American consumers, developers, and device manufacturers alike. The ruling is set to take effect on November 1, 2024, and will remain in place until November 1, 2027, leaving the outcome of Google’s appeal uncertain as the deadline approaches.
