A recent update to the Google app has introduced a new feature that enhances user interaction with the Gemini AI. The addition of the Ask Gemini button within Android’s text selection menu simplifies the process of querying the AI, transforming it into a seamless one-step action.
Previously, users could share selected text with Gemini by utilizing the Share button, but this new shortcut streamlines the experience significantly. While the exact rollout date remains uncertain, reports indicate that the feature is appearing across various versions of the Google app, particularly version 17.51.19.
Enhanced Accessibility
Accessing Gemini has become more intuitive, as users can now long-press the power button on most Android devices to engage with the AI. Google continues to innovate by integrating generative AI capabilities into its suite of applications, including Chrome for Android. The Ask Gemini shortcut, which was initially highlighted in March of last year, is now gradually making its presence felt in the text selection menus of multiple apps.
Upon tapping the Ask Gemini option, users are taken directly to the Gemini app, with the selected text automatically pasted for immediate use. This eliminates the previous need to manually copy and paste, thereby enhancing user efficiency.
The feature has been observed in both the 17.51.19 and 17.51.18 versions of the Google app, showcasing its versatility across different platforms. Users can now execute a Gemini query simply by tapping the button and hitting send, making the interaction with the AI more fluid and user-friendly.
In addition to Google Chrome, the Ask Gemini button is also available in the context menus of other browsers like Mozilla Firefox, as well as popular third-party applications such as WhatsApp and Slack. This broadens the accessibility of the feature, allowing users to engage with Gemini across various digital environments.
While the context menu may vary slightly depending on device type—such as foldable interfaces or slab-style phones—the Ask Gemini option remains a valuable enhancement to the Android experience. This feature appears to have been rolled out through a server-side update, reaching users on the stable version of the Google app.
