Google, Gmail, and Meet hit by widespread outage, causing login issues

What you need to know

This morning, Google faced a significant disruption as users reported difficulties accessing several of its key services, including Google Meet, Gmail, and Drive. The issues began around 11 am ET, leading to an influx of complaints on DownDetector, where over 6,000 users noted problems logging into their accounts.

Many users encountered frustrating ‘502’ error messages, which indicated that the platform was unable to process their login attempts. This outage not only affected Google’s own applications but also impacted third-party websites that rely on Google credentials for user authentication.

In response to the situation, Google acknowledged the outage and assured users that their engineering team was actively addressing the problem. By 8:30 am PDT (11:30 am ET), they reported that the cause had been identified and appropriate measures were implemented to restore functionality. Users were informed that they should now be able to log in to Google services without further issues.

Additionally, the outage extended to Google Maps, which experienced loading problems that resulted in only outlines appearing on the map, devoid of names and other essential navigation features. Fortunately, Google acted swiftly to rectify this issue, confirming to Android Central that Google Maps was fully operational again for those affected earlier in the day.
