What you need to know
In a recent announcement, Google unveiled a suite of enhancements for its Home app, prominently featuring the integration of Gemini, which promises to elevate routine creation to new heights. This innovative AI tool allows users to engage in conversations to tailor routines that meet specific needs, while also offering automation suggestions based on user input.
Additionally, Google is initiating a test phase for a select group of Pixel users, introducing a “Home Summary” widget within the Home app. This feature aims to streamline the user experience by providing a comprehensive overview of smart home activities.
The evolution of the smart home experience was a focal point during Google’s I/O announcements. A recent blog post from Google for Developers shed light on forthcoming updates to the Home API, highlighting the growing role of Gemini within the Home app. Originally introduced in the Public Preview last year, Gemini is now set to enhance smart home automations significantly. Users can expect to interact with the AI using natural language, allowing for seamless creation of automations that align with their specific requirements.
Moreover, the capabilities of Gemini are expanding beyond just routine creation. Following its camera update last November, the AI will now also provide descriptive insights, facilitate camera history searches, and more. In conjunction with these advancements, Google is enhancing its Home API to support a variety of partners, including First Alert for smoke alarm control, Yale for new Matter locks, Cync for lighting and fan controls, iRobot for select Roomba models, Motorola Moto Tag for custom routines, and Tuya Smart for simplified Matter-capable setups.
A loaded I/O 2025
The I/O 2025 event was a treasure trove of announcements aimed at both consumers and developers. Among the standout features was a preview of Android 16, showcasing Google’s Material 3 Expressive redesign. This new design language is crafted to be more vibrant and emotionally resonant, allowing users to curate their ideal digital experience. Additionally, Google spotlighted Gemini 2.5, its most advanced model to date, which is powered by Deep Think and the Flash model. This evolution is part of Google’s broader vision to transform Gemini into a “World Model,” capable of simulating and comprehending the complexities of the world in a manner akin to human understanding.
