Google improves camera playback in Home app, but some are still frustrated

Google has recently unveiled an update to its Google Home app, specifically version 3.33, which aims to address a long-standing concern among Nest camera users. This update is particularly focused on enhancing the experience of scrolling through video history on Android devices, promising improved framerate and loading times that should make navigating the camera timeline a more fluid experience.

Enhanced Features and User Feedback

The changelog, dated May 28 and made public just yesterday, highlights these performance enhancements as a key feature of the update. However, early feedback from users has been somewhat mixed. While some have expressed satisfaction with the improvements, others feel that the scrubbing performance still leaves much to be desired. In a discussion on X, Android Police’s Artem Russakovskii voiced his disappointment with the timeline performance on one of his cameras. In contrast, 9to5Google’s Ben Schoon acknowledged the update’s imperfections but noted it represents a significant improvement over previous versions.

In addition to the performance upgrades, the update introduces a general release of the limited-access member tier. This feature allows users to share their smart home setups with family, roommates, or guests while maintaining control over what these individuals can see and manage. Users can specify whether a member can only view activity or if they can also adjust device settings and automations.

The update also includes several bug fixes aimed at enhancing overall stability. These fixes address crashes in critical areas such as the Automations tab, Wi-Fi and Climate categories, and notification permissions. Furthermore, it resolves issues related to inviting household members and accessing service settings for specific devices, contributing to a more seamless user experience.

As the tech community continues to evaluate the impact of this update, it remains to be seen how these changes will shape the user experience for Google Home app users moving forward.
