Google is cracking down on Android apps that use too much memory

Google is taking significant steps to enhance the performance of Android devices by implementing stricter memory management for applications. In a recent blog post, the tech giant announced that the memory limits for individual apps, introduced with Android 17, will soon be extended to a broader range of devices, encompassing those equipped with as little as 4GB of RAM to those boasting over 16GB.

New Memory Management Strategy

The new strategy involves a system where, once an app reaches its designated memory limit, the operating system will transfer some of the app’s data into compressed memory, commonly referred to as zRAM. While this approach allows the app to continue functioning, users may notice a slight decrease in performance due to the additional processing power required for this memory management technique. Should an app persist in consuming excessive memory, Android has the capability to terminate it entirely.

As highlighted by Android Authority, this initiative aims to reduce instances where a single app can cause a device to lag, thereby improving the overall user experience. Google is encouraging developers to optimize their applications to comply with these new memory constraints and has recommended that they conduct a thorough audit of their memory usage.

To assist developers in this transition, Google is providing a suite of new tools, resources, and references designed to help identify and rectify issues that may lead to high memory consumption in apps. This proactive approach is particularly beneficial for users who prefer to keep their devices for an extended period.
