Google Is Putting Tighter Memory Limits on Android Apps

In a strategic move to enhance the performance of Android devices, Google has implemented tighter memory limits for applications in its latest operating system, Android 17. This initiative aims to curb the tendency of memory-intensive apps to monopolize system resources, thereby ensuring a smoother experience for users. Currently, this OS-level enforcement is being rolled out on Pixel devices, with plans for broader adoption by various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the upcoming year.

The new memory limits aim to protect the overall user experience

The challenge arises when an application consumes an excessive amount of RAM, which can hinder the performance of other applications and essential system processes. Users often notice this lag when multitasking or engaging with resource-heavy games. Google’s objective is to establish a balance, preventing any single app from commandeering the available memory.

With Android 17, memory limits are tailored to each device’s total RAM, fostering a more stable and predictable environment for both applications and users. Google has indicated that manufacturers will implement these limits across a range of devices, from those equipped with 4GB of RAM to those boasting over 16GB.

When an application exceeds its designated memory threshold, Android can intervene by compressing some of the app’s data. However, this compression process may introduce performance trade-offs, as it requires additional processing power from the device. Should an app persist in exceeding its memory limit, Android has the capability to terminate it, necessitating a restart by the user to regain access.
