What you need to know
- Google Maps is poised for enhancements that promise a more user-friendly experience, offering a wealth of information at a glance.
- New features will include real-time updates on parking availability, fuel-efficient routes, and estimated time of arrival (ETA), all accessible from the initial overview screen after entering a destination.
- This functionality is currently in a testing phase and is expected to be rolled out in future app updates.
In recent months, Google Maps has been evolving with a variety of innovative features aimed at enhancing user experience. From reporting weather-related disruptions to providing live updates during trips via Android 16 Beta 2, Google is committed to making Maps not only more informative but also more intuitive.
However, the app has faced criticism for not delivering all essential information in a single glance. Presently, Google Maps on Android displays only three key details: traffic conditions, distance to the destination, and travel time. Fortunately, a recent discovery by Android Police tipster Moshe indicates that Google Maps is set to expand its offerings significantly.
Users will soon be able to see additional information directly within the first overview window of Google Maps. This includes:
- Parking availability, denoted by a “P” icon
- Fuel-efficient route options
- Precise ETA for reaching the destination
These enhancements will provide users with a clearer picture of their destination’s conditions, allowing for better trip planning. Screenshots shared by the tipster illustrate these forthcoming features, showcasing how they will appear in the app.

Currently, to access fuel-efficient routes, users must swipe up on the panel at the bottom of the app to view route options, which include those marked with a “leaf” icon. When a fuel-efficient route is available, it will be displayed alongside the fastest route, allowing users to choose their preferred option. The same approach applies to parking information and ETA as well.
While the timeline for a broader rollout remains uncertain, it appears that the tipster may have gained early access due to their high-tier Local Guide status on Google Maps. This feature is still in the testing phase, with expectations for it to be included in upcoming updates.
In a separate note, some Google Maps users have reported an issue where their entire Timeline history has vanished from the web version. Despite having their Timeline enabled, users are greeted with a “No visits for this day” message. This anomaly may stem from Google’s recent decision to store location history directly on devices rather than in the cloud, suggesting a potential shift away from the web version in favor of keeping updates exclusive to the app.
