Google is making strides in enhancing its Maps application with the introduction of a new feature called the “Ask about place” chip, powered by its AI model, Gemini. This innovation allows users to engage directly with the app by tapping the chip when selecting a location. Once activated, users can pose questions regarding the chosen place, and Gemini will respond with relevant information, including directions and additional details.
As reported by Android Authority and social media insider AssembleDebug, this feature aims to streamline the user experience within the Maps app. Upon entering a query, Gemini verifies the selected location and provides a tappable link that directs users to the requested information. This includes not only directions but also the estimated travel time and other pertinent details about the location.
However, it appears that the rollout of this feature is not without its challenges. Reports indicate that the “Ask about place” chip does not function flawlessly at all times. While it has been observed for most points of interest, there are instances where Gemini is unable to fulfill the request, prompting speculation about the potential integration of certain features under a more advanced version of Gemini. As of now, this remains unconfirmed, suggesting that the rollout may be more of a testing phase than a fully operational feature.
This latest feature draws parallels to a previous update Google implemented last year, which aimed to simplify the process of obtaining directions through Gemini. Initially, users had to navigate through links to receive directions, but subsequent changes allowed Gemini to operate seamlessly within the Maps extension. Now, users can simply state commands like “Navigate to [place]” or “Take me to [x],” with the AI handling the rest. Despite these advancements, it seems users are still required to interact with the provided link before receiving directions, marking a curious step back in user experience.
In addition to the “Ask about place” feature, a new update is reportedly in the works, focusing on enhancing the overall user-friendliness of the Maps app. This update aims to provide users with essential information at a glance, such as available parking, fuel efficiency, and estimated time of arrival (ETA), all presented in the initial window after setting a destination.
