Google Meet may soon remove support for Google TV and Android TV

The Google Meet application, while not a household name among Android TV and Google TV users, has served a niche purpose since its inception. Launched in 2020 amidst the global pandemic, the app was initially branded as Duo and offered a unique way for users to engage in video calls via their television screens by connecting a webcam. This functionality provided a larger viewing experience for virtual gatherings during a time when in-person interactions were limited.

However, recent developments indicate that Google is poised to retire this feature. A recent update to the Google Meet app has revealed code that suggests an impending shutdown, with specific references to “depreciation.” The update includes a message that reads:

Soon you won’t be able to use Google Meet on your Android TV to make calls. Click below for alternatives and to learn more.

While this notification has not yet been activated within the app itself, its discovery signals a clear direction from Google regarding the app’s future. Users have already witnessed a similar fate for Google Meet on Samsung TVs, where the service was discontinued in March. The decision to phase out the app on its own platform raises eyebrows, particularly given that Google TV had only recently introduced “Call Notifications,” a feature that relies on the Meet app.

For the time being, the Google Meet app remains operational. However, users are encouraged to explore alternative options as the clock ticks down on this once-innovative service.
