Google Messages is picking up a couple of genuinely useful upgrades

Google is making strides in enhancing the functionality of its Messages app, particularly as the adoption of Rich Communication Services (RCS) continues to rise. Among the anticipated updates is a feature that allows users to copy only a selected portion of a message, addressing a long-standing limitation that many have found cumbersome.

Copying part of messages may finally get easier

In the latest beta version of Google Messages, users will soon have the ability to tap and hold a message to reveal new interactive options. This update introduces inline text selection, enabling users to highlight specific sections of text within a message. After highlighting, a simple long-press will allow for the use of Android’s copy function, making it easier than ever to extract just the information needed without the hassle of copying entire messages. The traditional option to copy the full text remains available for those who prefer it.

While this feature is not yet widely available, its introduction marks a significant improvement in user experience. Additionally, Google is also enhancing the Messages app on Wear OS with a new ‘Mark as read’ button. This feature allows users to mark messages as read directly from the notification when they first arrive, streamlining the process without necessitating the opening of the conversation. However, it’s worth noting that this option only appears upon the initial notification and is not available when revisiting it later from the notification shade.

As these updates roll out, they reflect Google’s commitment to refining its messaging platform, aligning its features more closely with user expectations and the competitive landscape. With the ability to copy selective text and manage notifications more efficiently, Google Messages is poised to offer a more user-friendly experience for its growing base of RCS users.
