Google Messages update adds cleaner link and YouTube video previews

What you need to know

In a move that aims to enhance user experience, Google is introducing a revamped design for link previews within its Messages app. This update, as reported by 9to5Google, focuses on elevating the visibility of website titles and thumbnails while streamlining the information displayed.

  • The new link previews will showcase enlarged site titles and thumbnails, creating a more visually appealing interface.
  • Notably, the updated previews will omit full link URLs and descriptions, which may alter how users interact with shared content.
  • To access the complete URL, users can either copy it directly or adjust their settings to disable link previews altogether.

The previous iteration of link previews featured a color-coded shading for the site URL, displayed prominently above the thumbnail. Below the thumbnail, users could find a title, description, and the general site URL, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the content being shared. This format often resulted in a cluttered appearance, with various elements vying for attention.

With the latest update, Google Messages opts for a more minimalist approach. The link previews now prioritize a larger thumbnail and title, while the exact link URL is concealed. Users will still see the general site URL positioned beneath the title, maintaining some context without overwhelming the visual space. The thumbnail remains below the text bubble, which retains its color-shaded design, harmonizing with the user’s chosen Material 3 or Material 3 Expressive theme.

This redesign mirrors the aesthetic of Google Discover cards, resulting in cleaner conversation threads. However, it does come at the cost of reduced information accessibility prior to clicking on a link. For those who prefer to see the full link details, a long press on the preview card will allow them to copy the precise URL.

Alternatively, users have the option to toggle off the Show all previews or Show only web link previews settings within Google Messages. Disabling these features will revert the display to show only the full link URL in conversations, foregoing the titles, images, and descriptions altogether.

Android Central has confirmed that this updated link preview feature is currently rolling out with version 2025112100RC01 on the beta channel, with broader availability anticipated in the near future.
