A significant shift is underway for users enrolled in the beta program of Phone by Google, as the company prepares for a comprehensive redesign under the Material 3 Expressive framework. The much-discussed Favorites tab is being phased out, making way for a more streamlined interface that enhances user experience.
New Favorites Bar Implementation
In a recent announcement, Google revealed that the traditional Favorites tab will be replaced by a “Favorites bar” positioned at the top of the Recents feed, which is set to be rebranded as “Home.” This new feature will showcase a carousel of favorites, displaying larger profile avatars for easier identification. Users can scroll left to access an “Add” shortcut, while a simple tap on the chevron allows them to hide the carousel when not in use.
This redesign aims to simplify the app’s navigation, consolidating it into three primary sections: Recents, Contacts, and Voicemail, along with the familiar floating action button (FAB) for quick access to the number pad. The latest beta version, 182, rolled out yesterday, introducing these changes widely. However, due to a server-side component, some users may not notice the update immediately after installation. This transition affects both Pixel devices and non-Google phones, including those yet to receive the Material 3 Expressive redesign.
Changes for Google Phone Users
For Google Phone users already experiencing the M3 Expressive redesign, the Favorites tab will also be eliminated, although it continues to be referred to as the Recents tab for the time being. The full rollout of the Expressive redesign will further streamline the bottom navigation bar, which will consist solely of Home, Keypad, and Voicemail.
As these changes unfold, users can anticipate a more cohesive and intuitive interface that aligns with the evolving design philosophy of Google’s applications, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
