In a notable advancement for its Pixel series, Google is enhancing its offerings with the latest Pixel Drop update. This update introduces a range of features, including an expansion of satellite messaging capabilities, which is particularly beneficial for users venturing beyond cellular coverage.

The Pixel 9 series stands out as one of the select few smartphones equipped with satellite connectivity. Previously limited to the continental United States, this feature is now accessible in Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and parts of Europe. Users can connect to compatible satellite networks to request emergency assistance when traditional cellular service is unavailable. Initially reliant on Google’s own satellite SOS system, which is complimentary for the first two years, the update will also incorporate support for Verizon and T-Mobile, broadening the options for satellite messaging.

In addition to satellite messaging, the Pixel 9 family is set to unveil an innovative video recording feature. Following the Pixel Drop update, users will be able to link a Pixel device with another Pixel or a compatible GoPro camera, allowing for simultaneous video recording from multiple angles. This functionality aims to elevate the quality of mobile recordings, providing a more professional touch to user-generated content. Notably, while only one device needs to be a Pixel 9, the other can be any Pixel from the 6 series onward. For GoPro enthusiasts, compatibility extends to the 2021 GoPro HERO10 Black or newer, with app support available for popular platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat.

Something for everyone

For those who do not own a Pixel phone, Google has ensured that some of these enhancements will still be accessible. The AI-powered scam detection feature, which has been a hallmark of the Pixel experience, is set to roll out to all currently supported Android devices, albeit in a more limited capacity. Users of the Google Messages app will benefit from the AI’s ability to identify potential scam texts, similar to the functionality available on Pixel models 6 through 8. However, it is important to note that the comprehensive phone call scam alerts will remain exclusive to the Pixel 9 series.
