Google’s Personal Safety App Update: What You Need to Know

Google’s Personal Safety app has been a staple for users looking to stay safe and secure on their devices. However, recent developments have shown that some older phones may no longer support the app. According to Android Authority, the latest code reveals that the app now requires Android 12 or later to function properly.

Initially exclusive to Pixel devices, Personal Safety has since expanded to other phones, with certain releases not available on older hardware. The app offers features such as managing emergency contact information, safety check-ins, and even automatically detecting car crashes. Currently, Google offers three variants of the app: one for older Pixels, one for Pixel 4 and newer, and one for third-party OEMs.

Surprisingly, the most recent builds for the latter two versions will now mandate Android 12 or later, instead of the previous requirement of Android 10 or later. While this change may not affect the majority of users, Pixel owners will remain unaffected, and only older third-party phones may no longer support the app.

For those who rely on the app with older Android devices, this news may come as a disappointment. However, it’s essential to remember that safety goes beyond just accidents—it also involves protecting your device from security breaches. Ensuring that your device runs on the latest software is crucial for maintaining security.

Perhaps, for some users, this update may serve as a prompt to consider upgrading their devices for enhanced safety and security measures.
