Google’s Phone app may finally get a much-requested feature

What you need to know

User reports indicate that Google is making strides toward integrating a native Call Recording feature within its Phone app for Pixel devices. A recent post on the PixelUsersIndia subreddit highlighted a screenshot from a user with a Pixel 9a, showcasing a new “Call Recording” setting. This feature includes options for toggling Call Recording on and off, managing recordings, and even enabling automatic recording for calls with non-contacts. Users can also specify particular numbers for automatic recording.

Moreover, Google’s support page has been refreshed to confirm that the Call Recording feature is compatible with Pixel 6 models and newer, provided they are running Android 9 or higher.

Is it truly on the way?

Despite the excitement surrounding this feature, it appears that the Call Recording capability has yet to reach a wider audience. The user who shared the information seems to be the sole recipient of this feature on their Pixel 9a, raising questions about why it has not been rolled out to the more recent Pixel 10 series. Users with Pixel 8a and Pixel 10 devices, currently running the Phone app version 191.0.805002009 in public beta, have reported not seeing the feature.

The discussion around Call Recording on Pixel devices is not new; it has been a topic of interest for the past five years. However, Google faced significant hurdles, particularly concerning the legality of call recording, which varies by state. In “All Party” states, both participants must consent to the recording, while “One Party” states allow for recording as long as one party is aware of it.

In a potential move to enhance user experience, recent APK teardown reports suggest that Google may eliminate the audio disclaimer typically used to inform users that a call is being recorded. Instead, a subtle chime could replace the vocal notification, allowing users to remain discreet while keeping track of their calls.
