LineageOS 23 brings Android 16 to over 100 devices despite Google’s holdups

What you need to know

LineageOS has unveiled its latest version, 23.0, crafted on the foundation of Android 16, and it is now accessible to a diverse array of over a hundred devices. While the complete suite of features from Android 16, particularly the QPR1 elements, remains under wraps due to Google’s delayed release, the LineageOS team has taken the initiative to launch with the components currently available.

The absence of QPR1 updates is the reason behind the version designation of 23.0 instead of 23.1, as noted by Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman. Rather than waiting for Google to catch up, the team has prioritized delivering a functional Android 16 experience to users, ensuring they do not remain in limbo.

  • Users can look forward to enhancements such as predictive back navigation, a full edge-to-edge display, improved app scaling, and support for advanced protection devices.
  • The Aperture feature introduces Ultra HDR and RAW capture capabilities, while Twelve has become more intuitive with Jellyfin integration and a shuffle function.
  • Additionally, Catapult has emerged as a sleek, ad-free TV launcher, enriching the user experience.

As the LineageOS team progresses, they are also phasing out support for the older 21.x series, which means no new devices will be added to that branch. Instead, those devices will continue to receive updates under the 22.2 (Android 15) version while the focus shifts to expanding the 23.0 lineup.

The official Changelog 30 encapsulates many of these updates and architectural enhancements. The team has not only concentrated on advancing to Android 16 but has also redefined core subsystems to foster greater flexibility and modernization, setting the stage for future developments in the LineageOS ecosystem.
