Microsoft can’t launch Xbox store on Android, even though it’s ready to go

Microsoft’s plans to launch an enhanced Xbox app on Android have encountered an unexpected hurdle. Initially slated for release in November, the app promises to enable users to purchase and remotely play Xbox games directly from their mobile devices. However, as the month comes to a close, the anticipated launch remains on hold.

Delay Due to Legal Complications

In a recent communication on social media platforms Bluesky and X, Xbox president Sarah Bond explained that the delay stems from a “temporary administrative stay” granted by the courts. She stated:

“Due to a temporary administrative stay recently granted by the courts, we are currently unable to launch these features as planned. Our team has the functionality built and ready to go live as soon as the court makes a final decision.”

While Bond did not directly attribute the setback to Google, it is noteworthy that a US court recently approved a request from Google for such a stay. This decision follows a ruling mandating that the Play Store be opened to various changes, including the introduction of alternative app stores and the allowance for developers to utilize different billing systems.

In contrast, both the PlayStation and Steam applications currently permit users to purchase games without relying on Google’s billing framework. This raises questions about why the existing Xbox app for Android does not offer similar purchasing capabilities.

For those eager to engage with Xbox titles on the go, Microsoft does provide a subscription-based Xbox Cloud Gaming service. This feature allows users to remotely access both Game Pass and their owned games. However, Google’s policies stipulate that apps featuring subscription services must utilize Play Store billing. Currently, the Xbox Cloud Gaming app is exclusively available through the Galaxy Store.
