Microsoft to shut down Outlook Lite app on Android by May 25

Microsoft has officially announced the retirement of its Outlook Lite app for Android, effective May 25, 2026. This decision, reported by Neowin, signals the end of support for the streamlined version of its email client, prompting users to transition to the more comprehensive Outlook Mobile app.

Post-retirement, Outlook Lite will cease to provide access to mailboxes. Although the app may still launch, users will find that emails, calendars, and attachments can only be accessed through Outlook Mobile. Notably, Microsoft has already halted new downloads of Outlook Lite since October 2025, indicating a clear trajectory towards phasing out the app.

Why Microsoft is shutting down Outlook Lite

Initially launched as a simplified solution for users with entry-level smartphones or limited network capabilities, Outlook Lite has served a specific niche. However, Microsoft is now focusing on consolidating its mobile strategy around the feature-rich Outlook Mobile app. This shift aims to enhance compliance, expand mailbox support, and deepen integration with Microsoft 365 services.

What users need to do

In light of this transition, Microsoft has reassured users that their data will remain secure. Existing emails, calendar entries, and attachments will automatically sync once users log into Outlook Mobile. To facilitate this migration, the company recommends the following steps:

  • Utilize the Upgrade option within Outlook Lite to redirect to the Play Store.
  • Manually download Outlook Mobile if the upgrade prompt is not available.
  • Sign in with the same account to seamlessly restore access to all data.

For IT administrators, no special actions are required. However, organizations are encouraged to update their internal documentation and guide employees towards Outlook Mobile to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any disruptions.
