Samsung has unveiled a new application named Hearapy, now accessible for Android users via the Google Play store. This innovative app aims to alleviate motion sickness symptoms through the simple yet effective medium of sound.
The operation of Hearapy is refreshingly straightforward. Users are guided to listen to a low 100Hz sine wave tone through connected headphones for a duration of 60 seconds. This auditory stimulation is designed to engage the vestibular system, the inner ear components responsible for balance and spatial orientation. While the app allows users to adjust the tone’s playback time between 40 to 120 seconds, a full minute is touted to provide relief from motion sickness, such as nausea, for up to two hours. The tone can be repeated as necessary for ongoing relief.
This initiative draws inspiration from recent research conducted by Nagoya University in Japan, which highlighted how specific sound wavelengths could mitigate the disorientation and discomfort experienced by individuals attempting to read while in a moving vehicle. However, it is important to note that while Hearapy offers a promising solution, it does not guarantee complete relief, and its effectiveness may vary depending on the headphones used.
Samsung recommends using the app in conjunction with its Galaxy Buds 4 Pro for optimal results. Nevertheless, Hearapy is compatible with most headphones or earbuds, provided they can reproduce the tone at a volume level between 80 to 85 decibels, which is essential for achieving the desired effects.
