Google has taken a significant step in enhancing the user experience of its Android operating system with the recent update to the Android Package Installer. This update introduces the new Material 3 Expressive design language, aligning the Package Installer’s aesthetics with the broader visual overhaul seen across Android 16.
Redesign Highlights
The revamped Package Installer now features a more intuitive layout, shifting the app name and icon to the center of the dialog. This change emphasizes the action at hand—whether it’s installing an app or confirming an installation—by placing it front and center. The previous design, which displayed the app’s details at the top, has been replaced with a focus on the current task, enhancing clarity for users.
In addition to the layout changes, the dialog adopts new button styles that align with Material 3 principles. The primary actions, such as “Install” and “Open,” are now represented by Filled Buttons, while secondary actions like “Cancel” and “Done” utilize Elevated Buttons. This distinction helps users quickly identify the importance of each option, a notable improvement over the previous standard Text Buttons that lacked visual cues for interactivity.
The installation progress bar has also been updated to feature the new Material 3 Linear Progress Indicator, providing a more modern and visually appealing way to track installation progress. Furthermore, the font size for the dialog’s title has been increased, resulting in a slightly taller window that enhances readability.
Interestingly, the system dialog that requests permission to sideload apps has not yet received the same redesign and continues to use the older button style. This inconsistency may be an oversight, as the updated sideloading UI is part of a broader effort to modernize the Android experience.
To access these enhancements, users must install the Android 16 QPR2 update, as the Package Installer is not a modular component that can be updated through Google Play System Updates. This requirement underscores the importance of keeping the operating system up to date to benefit from the latest features and improvements.
