What you need to know
Starting today, Threads users can engage in direct communication through the app’s newly introduced Direct Messages (DMs). This feature allows users to text their followers or mutual followers in a one-on-one format, eliminating the need to toggle between Instagram and Threads.
In a recent press release, Threads emphasized that while it shares a lineage with Instagram, users often curate distinct followings based on the unique content shared on Threads. The introduction of DMs aims to enhance connectivity among these accounts. However, for safety and privacy considerations, messaging will initially be restricted to users who follow each other and mutual followers aged 18 and older. “As we expand messaging, we’re prioritizing safety to help make DMs another place for positive interactions on Threads,” the statement noted.
In addition to DMs, Threads is set to enhance user interaction with the introduction of Group Messaging. This feature will facilitate conversations among multiple participants, allowing users to manage who can message them and to filter through unread messages with ease. These enhancements are expected to roll out soon.
Moreover, Threads is unveiling a new Highlighter feature designed to ensure users stay informed about trending topics. This feature will highlight significant discussions in yellow, encouraging meaningful engagement. Initially, the Highlighter will be visible in the content discovery sections of the app, with plans for broader implementation in the future.
As Threads approaches its third anniversary, the platform remains committed to empowering communities and creators, promoting diverse perspectives, and nurturing a vibrant conversational space. For those who actively use Threads, these new features are now available for exploration.
