What’s actually eating all the storage space on your Android Phone?

Running low on storage space on your Android device is a common frustration, especially for those who have transitioned data across multiple phones over the years. While it’s easy to overlook, apps, images, videos, and forgotten downloads often consume a significant portion of your storage. Fortunately, there are efficient methods to identify and delete these files, allowing you to reclaim valuable space.

Apps

One of the most straightforward approaches to free up space is to uninstall unused apps. Navigate to Settings > Device Care > Storage > Apps to gain insight into which applications are occupying the most storage. Simply select the app you wish to remove and tap Uninstall.

If you prefer to keep your app settings intact, consider archiving instead. Following the same steps, choose Archive to remove the app’s core files while preserving your login information and personal settings for future use. Android also offers an “auto-archive” feature that can automatically archive apps you seldom use when your storage is running low. When attempting to install a new app without sufficient space, a prompt will appear, allowing you to enable auto-archive. This feature can free up nearly 60 percent of an app’s storage without losing user data.

Images and Videos

For those who are less concerned about backing up media, deleting unwanted images and videos can significantly clear up space. You can do this directly from your phone’s gallery or by accessing Storage in Settings > Images or Videos to select files for removal. However, if preserving memories is a priority, utilizing Google Photos is a wise choice. The app allows you to back up images and videos to your Google account, which includes 15GB of free cloud storage shared across various Google services.

Given that 15GB may not suffice for extensive media collections, a Google One subscription could be beneficial, offering 100GB for a month or 200GB for a month. Once your files are securely backed up, you can free up space by accessing the Photos app, tapping on your profile image, and selecting Free up space on this device. This will delete items already backed up in the cloud while keeping them accessible in Google Photos. Additionally, enabling Smart Storage can automate the process of clearing backed-up images, found under Settings > Storage > Free up space.

Other Data

Beyond apps and media, other files may be consuming your storage without your knowledge. Return to Settings > Device Care > Storage to explore sections labeled Duplicate files and Large files. These sections will provide options for deletion, including old media files, downloads, and app caches. Reviewing Other files can also reveal forgotten items that can be safely discarded.

For users of streaming and social media apps, clearing cached data can yield substantial storage savings. Regularly emptying your trash is another essential practice; navigate to Settings > Device Care > Storage to locate and clear the Trash or Recycle bin. By implementing these strategies, you can maintain a well-organized and efficient device, ensuring that you always have the space you need.
