WhatsApp for Android is currently exploring an exciting new feature that promises to enhance the way users share memories. According to insights from the feature tracker WABetaInfo, the platform is in the testing phase for motion photos, a functionality that captures both audio and movement before and after a snapshot is taken. This feature has been identified in the latest beta version of WhatsApp, specifically the 2.25.22.29 update, which is now accessible on Google Play for select beta testers.
WhatsApp Might Soon Support Motion Photos
As reported, the motion photo feature is indicated by a distinctive new icon—a play button encircled by a ring—visible in the image selection interface. This icon appears in the top right corner, allowing users to easily send images as motion photos. WhatsApp characterizes these motion photos as “a recording of the moments before & after a photo was taken,” adding an engaging layer to the traditional photo-sharing experience.
In addition to capturing visuals, these motion photos will also support audio, enriching the storytelling aspect of shared moments. It’s worth noting that while many Android smartphones already incorporate similar capabilities—Samsung refers to it as Motion Photos, while Google’s Pixel devices utilize a feature called Top Shot—users will only be able to send motion photos if their devices inherently support this functionality. However, even if a user’s device lacks the capability to capture motion photos, they will still be able to view them when received from others.
Once fully rolled out, this feature aims to resolve the common issue where motion photos are converted into video files upon sharing. As of now, WhatsApp has not provided a timeline for when this feature will transition out of beta testing, leaving users eagerly anticipating its official launch.
