Your Android Auto just got a calling upgrade

What you need to know

  • Google Meet is now rolling out on Android Auto, allowing users to join meetings directly from their car dashboard.
  • The Android Auto app features Scheduled and History tabs for easier management of upcoming calls.
  • Google Meet on Android Auto is audio-only, providing controls for muting, ending calls, and changing Bluetooth output devices.

After teasing the feature earlier this year, Google has officially begun the rollout of Google Meet integration with Android Auto. Previously, joining a Google Meet call from the car required a precarious balancing act with your phone, making it a less-than-ideal experience. Now, with this new integration, users can seamlessly participate in meetings right from their vehicle’s dashboard.

Reports from 9to5Google indicate that users are starting to receive notifications for upcoming meetings and can join conference calls through the Android Auto interface. This enhancement marks a significant improvement in the way professionals can engage in meetings while on the go.

However, there is a minor detail to keep in mind. The first time you access Google Meet via Android Auto, you may need to restart the Google Meet app on your phone to ensure everything functions smoothly. Fortunately, this initial setup step appears to be a one-time requirement, allowing for a hassle-free experience in future meetings.

Within the Android Auto version of Google Meet, users will discover tabs for Scheduled calls and History, streamlining the process of rejoining meetings or accessing past calls. While video sharing is not supported, the interface is designed to be driving-friendly, allowing users to mute themselves, exit the meeting, and view participants who have joined the call.

This rollout signifies a pivotal moment for professionals who frequently conduct meetings while traveling, making the experience significantly more manageable. Additionally, Google is updating the integration with a newly redesigned Google Workspace icon for Meet.

Android Central’s Take

It’s intriguing to consider why it took Google so long to implement this feature. As we entered the era of video meetings and remote work nearly five years ago, the absence of a proper Google Meet integration on Android Auto seemed like a missed opportunity. Nonetheless, the arrival of this feature is a welcome enhancement for users navigating the demands of modern work life.
