What’s the deal? Databricks has made a strategic move by acquiring Electric, the creator of PGlite. This innovative lightweight version of Postgres operates within applications, browser tabs, user devices, or AI agent sandboxes, rather than relying on a separate server. This acquisition expands Databricks’ Postgres capabilities beyond its lakehouse architecture into the distributed environments that AI agents inhabit.

What’s the endgame?

In the model proposed by Databricks, each AI agent maintains its own local Postgres instance via PGlite, while simultaneously synchronizing its state with a central Lakebase Postgres system. Electric’s real-time synchronization engine plays a crucial role in ensuring that distributed agents remain aligned with a central record, thus preventing them from acting on outdated information or duplicating efforts.

Why now?

The timing of this acquisition is significant, as companies increasingly pivot towards agentic applications that operate differently from traditional software. These AI agents make runtime decisions about the data they require, frequently update their context, and function within sandboxes where continuous calls to a central cloud database can hinder performance. Databricks posits that a single managed database is no longer adequate; agents necessitate both reliable, governed data and rapidly changing local context.

The traction:

Electric has already garnered substantial traction among developers with PGlite. Weekly downloads surged from 1 million to an impressive 13 million between August 2025 and August 2026. The technical foundation of PGlite is deeply rooted in the Postgres ecosystem; Databricks noted that it was developed from foundational WASM Postgres work by Stas Kelvich, a co-founder of Neon, before Electric transformed the concept into an embeddable product utilized in millions of projects weekly.

The Postgres play:

This acquisition enhances Databricks’ database strategy significantly. Lakebase, its managed Postgres offering, delivers centralized infrastructure, while Electric introduces a compact implementation suitable for edge and embedded use cases. Databricks characterizes Postgres as an increasingly prevalent foundation for AI agents, especially where developers seek a unified database model across both central infrastructure and local execution.

The signal:

The race among database and cloud providers to establish the infrastructure stack for AI systems is intensifying. While much of the competition has centered around models, orchestration tools, and vector databases, the management of state, context, and synchronization between agents is emerging as a critical area of focus. “The world is building a new era of agentic applications which require distributed state and real-time data synchronization,” stated Databricks.
