EnterpriseDB (EDB), a prominent player in the Postgres data and AI landscape, has unveiled noteworthy advancements to its EDB Postgres® AI platform. This initiative aims to empower enterprises to implement secure, adaptable AI-driven applications within a sovereign, hybrid framework. The EDB Postgres AI platform presents a unified interface that merges cloud agility with a hybrid-first intelligent architecture, specifically designed to cater to transactional, analytical, and AI workloads. This integration facilitates organizations in expediting their AI projects from initial development stages to fully operational applications.
Hybrid DBaaS Model: Cloud Agility in a Sovereign Environment
In light of the escalating demand for versatile data management solutions, a recent EDB study, which surveyed numerous enterprise executives, revealed that over 56% of organizations are now deploying mission-critical workloads in a hybrid model. This trend underscores a growing preference for solutions that balance agility with control, particularly as data and AI become integral to business innovation. Supporting this shift, a Gartner poll indicates that while more than half of organizations are piloting generative AI, only 10% of these initiatives advance to full production. Once operational, generative AI models necessitate ongoing training, updates, and customization to address diverse personalization needs—requirements that demand increasingly expansive computational resources.
Jozef de Vries, Chief Product Engineering Officer at EDB, articulated the value of developing AI solutions within existing systems that manage traditional operational workloads. “What we’re delivering is a hybrid platform to enable sovereign data workloads with a cloud-like lifecycle management model in the customer’s environment of choice. This not only simplifies data management for transactional, analytical, and AI workloads but also enhances agility, portability, and granular control over total cost of ownership,” he stated.
The hybrid infrastructure of the EDB Postgres AI platform allows organizations to modernize their data strategies, manage costs effectively, and address the requirements of both traditional and AI-driven workloads. With streamlined database deployment, management, observability, and automation, EDB offers a comprehensive solution designed for transactional, analytical, and AI applications across various environments.
Additional New Enhancements to EDB Postgres AI
The introduction of the Hybrid Control Plane serves as a centralized management and automation tool for EDB Postgres AI. This feature automates administrative tasks while providing real-time observability across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. With access to over 200 metrics and advanced diagnostics, users can monitor database health, maintain up to 99.999% availability, and identify issues up to five times faster, thereby enhancing application performance by up to eight times. The Hybrid Control Plane is currently available in the tech preview of the EDB Postgres AI Software Deployment.
Another significant addition is the AI Accelerator, which facilitates enterprises in testing and deploying generative AI applications—ranging from chatbots to recommendation engines—within the trusted Postgres environment. Utilizing EDB’s Pipelines Extension and preloaded with pgvector, the AI Accelerator automates the entire data pipeline, including embedding generation, storage, indexing, and retrieval. This allows developers to seamlessly integrate GenAI functionality with minimal coding requirements. Aislinn Wright, VP of Product Management at EDB, emphasized, “AI Accelerator streamlines the AI data lifecycle from ingestion to real-time insights, providing automated embedding management and a powerful retrieval engine within a single Postgres environment. This enables businesses to rapidly integrate AI without the need for additional software solutions, unlocking faster, more dynamic ways to derive value from their data and swiftly transition from experimentation to production.”
The Analytics Accelerator enhances high-performance analytics across data tiers by leveraging lakehouse ecosystem integration and a Vectorized Query Engine. This allows customers to utilize familiar SQL to query columnar data stored in external object storage. It also supports Tiered Tables functionality, which offloads cold data to columnar tables in object storage, simplifying the management of analytics across multiple data tiers. Furthermore, it delivers near real-time OLAP capabilities with 18 times greater cost efficiency and 30 times faster performance than baseline PostgreSQL, enabling rapid insights and informed decision-making.
In conjunction with these enhancements, PostgreSQL version 17 is now generally available across EDB products. These updates further solidify Postgres as a high-performance platform capable of supporting transactional, analytical, and AI workloads. The latest version is designed for seamless workload management, offering flexibility across self-hosted environments, private and public clouds, and hybrid deployments.
