At the recent I/O 2024 developers conference, Google unveiled a suite of new features for Android phones that promise to enhance both the user experience and developer capabilities. Notably, the tech giant has expanded payment options, including the introduction of installment subscriptions. This new payment method allows users to spread the cost of high-priced apps over time, making it more manageable for their budgets. The installment option is particularly beneficial for apps with a one-time purchase fee or those utilizing subscription-based models.
Initial feedback from developers who had early access to the installment subscription feature has been positive. The option to pay in installments is not only user-friendly but also offers a more economical approach to annual subscriptions compared to monthly plans. Currently, users in Brazil, France, Italy, and Spain can take advantage of installment-based payments, with the Play Billing Lab app serving as a platform for developers to introduce new payment features to their audiences.
Developers are also now able to set app prices up to 9.99 and can adjust their pricing strategies in response to currency fluctuations against the U.S. dollar through the Play Console.
Improving App Discovery
Google is revolutionizing app discovery on the Play Store by implementing a keyword-driven system, similar to the Google Search ranking system for web content. This approach aims to improve the accuracy of app listings and make it easier for users to find what they’re looking for based on specific search queries. The new system will complement existing filters such as region, ads targeting, and URL linking.
In addition to these changes, Google is embracing the diversity of device form factors. The Play Store will now showcase how apps appear across various devices, including foldable phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. This means that users will be able to view screenshots and read ratings and reviews specific to each device type, providing a clearer understanding of an app’s performance across different platforms.
On the security front, Google is bolstering the Play Integrity API with three new features designed to help developers safeguard their apps. One such feature, App Access Risk, notifies developers if another app is potentially compromising user privacy by recording screen activity or misusing permissions. An automated response system will also inform developers about the status of Play Protect for their apps, including any detected malware activity, enabling them to address security issues promptly and protect users.
