Google is working on a ‘lookup’ button for unknown callers on Android

Google Enhances Android Experience with New Features

In a move that marries convenience with technological sophistication, Google is poised to introduce a feature that promises to streamline the way we interact with our phone’s call history. A user known as AssembleDebug has recently brought to light a “Lookup” button within the beta version of the Google Phone app. This nifty addition allows users to initiate a Google Search for an incoming phone number directly from the recent calls screen, with the number pre-filled, ready for investigation.

The Google Phone app, which comes as the default on Pixel devices, is also available for other Android users to download. The Lookup feature accompanies existing options such as “Block” and “History,” enhancing user control over their call management. This development is particularly timely given the prevalence of spam calls, often originating from numbers disguised to appear local, a tactic known as spoofing.

Many smartphone users can relate to the tedious task of manually copying and pasting unknown numbers into a search engine. The Lookup feature aims to eliminate this cumbersome process, offering a much-needed shortcut in an era where repeat nuisance calls are all too common.

Further expanding its suite of user-friendly tools, Google is also reportedly testing Gemini email summaries within the Android Gmail app. AssembleDebug has spotted a new button situated just below the email subject line that, once functional, is expected to provide users with a concise summary of the email’s content. While the button is not yet operational, there is also a new Gemini option appearing in Gmail’s menu, hinting at upcoming functionality.

For those with access to the Android Gemini app through a Google Workspace account, email summarization is already a reality. However, integrating this feature directly into the Gmail app would align with the existing web version, where Gemini summarization is already in place, offering a seamless experience across platforms.
