This proactive approach is designed to safeguard users from phishing and scamming attempts that have become all too common in the digital realm.

The warning system is straightforward yet effective. When a link is received from a sender not listed in the user’s contacts, a message will appear cautioning the user with the words, “Caution: this sender isn’t one of your contacts.” Below this caption, a further explanation advises, “Links from people that you don’t know may open unwanted or harmful content.” At this point, users are given a choice: to proceed with caution by acknowledging the potential risk or to cancel and avoid viewing the link altogether.

Insights from the same report suggest that this feature could extend to standard SMS messages as well. The warning message has been identified in the beta version 2024040201RCO0 of the Google Messages app, where it was enabled using feature flags. The feature is expected to undergo beta testing before being rolled out to the broader user base.

This update represents an evolution of the current warning system in place within the Google Messages app. Previously, a dialog box would appear when a link from an unknown number was clicked, but users could simply bypass it by pressing continue. The new implementation adds an extra layer of decision-making, prompting users to think twice before engaging with unknown links.

Google’s commitment to the RCS standard has been evident over the past few years, but the technology has not been without its challenges. In 2022, there were numerous complaints about businesses exploiting RCS to send spam promotional messages to users.
