Google’s Find My Device tipped to gain extra layer of user security

Enhancing Security with Biometric Features

In the ever-evolving realm of digital security, Google is taking a significant step forward by integrating a new biometric security option into its Find My Device application. This discovery was made by a keen-eyed tipster who delved into the latest app version, revealing the potential for users to secure their devices with something more personal than a password: their unique biometric data.

The intention behind this move is to provide users with a fortified layer of security. This biometric feature is expected to complement the existing “don’t ask again” checkbox that simplifies the Google account sign-in process. By doing so, it adds a robust layer of protection while maintaining user convenience.

Google’s “Remote Lock” feature, which was hinted at during the I/O conference, is designed to allow users to secure their devices remotely using their phone number and a security challenge. This innovative function is part of Google’s broader strategy to enhance user security and peace of mind.

Details gleaned from the collaboration between AssembleDebug and Android Authority suggest that the biometric option will be situated on the same page where users enter their Google account credentials. Once activated, this feature will enable swift sign-in using fingerprints, streamlining access while ensuring security.

Although the exact timeline for the rollout of the biometric security layer within the Find My Device app remains uncertain, it is anticipated to coincide with the network becoming more widespread. AssembleDebug’s findings also include the initial framework for the “Remote Lock” function, which surfaced following a recent Play Services update, though it is not yet operational.

Google has teased the full functionality of “Remote Lock” at I/O 2024, outlining a future where users can lock their devices using a phone number and a security challenge. The feature is expected to be enabled “later this year,” following updates to Play Services.

On the topic of network expansion, Google has been actively rolling out the Find My Device network to an increasing number of users. As of May, before the I/O 2024 event, users in Japan, the U.K., and the U.S. began to see the new network on their devices. This expansion is not limited to geography but also extends to a broader range of devices, including the Pixel 8 and Moto Razr Plus.

It’s noteworthy that Google’s Pixel series boasts the ability to be located even when powered off or shut down, a feature that is highlighted in the network’s description. However, this specific capability does not seem to be mentioned for other devices, such as the Moto Razr Plus, indicating a potential difference in the level of functionality offered across different hardware.
