Google’s redesigned Pixel Weather app is rolling out to a variety of other Android devices

Google Weather App’s New Horizon

In a move that brings a splash of color and a suite of new features to Android users worldwide, Google’s latest iteration of its Weather app is now gracing screens beyond its initial Pixel boundaries. The app’s modernized interface, part of the Material You design language, is now being enjoyed on a variety of devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, OnePlus Open, and Honor Magic 6 RSR. This broader adoption marks a significant shift from its original exclusivity to Google’s Pixel series.

The app’s new look is not just about aesthetics; it’s a gateway to Google’s comprehensive Weather platform, offering a more vibrant and informative user experience. One of the standout features is NowCast, a tool that provides hyper-local, real-time precipitation forecasts. This feature is a nod to the capabilities of the former Dark Sky app, which was highly regarded for its detailed weather updates before being acquired by Apple.

While the scope of the app’s deployment is yet to be fully disclosed, reports suggest that the latest Android version is not a prerequisite for enjoying the updated Weather app. Observations from 9to5Google indicate that the redesigned interface first made its appearance on the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet in mid-2023. Google then expanded its reach to older Pixel models and a select group of Samsung phones as the year progressed.

Historically, Google has reserved certain novel Android features for its Pixel lineup, with functionalities like Call Screening and Magic Eraser initially being Pixel exclusives. Over time, however, these features have found their way to a wider array of Android devices, which could be seen as an effort to unify and strengthen the Android ecosystem while addressing the needs of Google’s partners.

The latest weather app update has been spotted on a diverse range of devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 4, OnePlus Open, Honor Magic 6 RSR, and even on the Nokia 4.2—a device running an older Android version. This unexpected update was shared by a user on Twitter, highlighting the app’s unexpected reach:

Interesting, my old Nokia 4.2 got the new Google Weather “app” after an update to the Google app, today. This phone is on Android 11. I have never seen the new Google Weather on anything but a Pixel on Android 14, so it must be more widely rolling out. https://t.co/IXeyQvBCTA
