Meta Platforms Inc. Addresses Service Disruptions Across Multiple Apps

In a recent turn of events, Meta’s suite of applications experienced a series of intermittent outages, impacting users globally. This marked the second occurrence of such disruptions within a span of just over a month. Services affected included the widely-used messaging app WhatsApp, as well as Messenger and Instagram to a lesser extent. Meta’s own status page disclosed interruptions in several key business services, notably its Ads Manager, Messenger Platform, WhatsApp Business API, among others. WhatsApp’s team acknowledged the outage with a statement on their official Twitter account.

In an attempt to reassure the user base, the company communicated, “We know some people are experiencing issues right now, we’re working on getting things back to 100% for everyone as quickly as possible,” as noted at 2:55 p.m. ET on their social media.

Reports of difficulties in accessing Instagram and Messenger surfaced on social media, with users turning to crowdsourced reporting sites like Downdetector to log their experiences. However, it’s important to note that such sites do not provide official confirmation of outages, but rather indicate the possibility of service disruptions. Meta did not respond to press inquiries regarding the root cause of the issues at hand.

While WhatsApp seemed to bear the brunt of the problems, some users observed a restoration of services at the time of the report. Further assessments indicated that Meta’s apps were operational, with message sending capabilities via WhatsApp functional, suggesting that the outages may not have been universally experienced or had been rectified swiftly.

Public statements from Messenger, Facebook, or Instagram’s official channels did not confirm any difficulties, leaving users to rely on user reports and Meta’s status updates for information.

The memory of the previous significant outage on Super Tuesday was still fresh, where users encountered error messages across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Those issues lasted a few hours and also implicated business-centric features like Ads Manager.

The situation saw resolution later in the day, as confirmed by WhatsApp through a cheery message on their Twitter account, “And we’re back. Happy chatting!” at 6:19 pm ET, putting an end to the service interruption saga.
