A recent analysis by DoubleVerify engineers has identified a trend in mobile advertising known as AfterCall ads, where applications display advertisements immediately after a phone call ends. This practice generates hundreds of millions of impressions monthly and raises concerns about user experience and brand integrity. AfterCall applications operate using three components: a misleading permission, a Broadcast Receiver to capture end-of-call events, and an Activity to display ads. The SYSTEMALERTWINDOW permission allows these apps to show content over others, often granted under false pretenses. They utilize Android's telephony system to trigger ads post-call and employ tactics to obscure their presence, such as removing themselves from the recent apps list and using innocuous icons. Detection is challenging due to the lack of shared codebases and the obfuscation techniques used. The scale of the issue is significant, with numerous AfterCall applications identified monthly, negatively impacting user experience and raising concerns for advertisers.

Google is opposing the European Union's proposed amendments to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), warning that these changes could jeopardize user privacy and security. The DMA aims to reduce the dominance of major tech platforms by requiring gatekeepers like Google to share more data with competitors. Google is particularly concerned about the implications of sharing search data and granting third-party AI services access to sensitive Android features, fearing that this could lead to increased fraud and cyberattacks. The European Commission is pushing for Google to provide rival search engines with access to anonymized search data to enhance competition, but Google argues that once this data leaves its infrastructure, it becomes difficult to protect. DuckDuckGo and some researchers believe the Commission's proposals adequately address privacy risks, while others acknowledge the risks but suggest they should be balanced against technical protections. Additionally, EU regulators are advocating for deeper integration of competing AI assistants with Android, which Google warns could compromise existing security measures. Apple has shown support for some of Google's concerns regarding access to operating systems.

Google is merging Android and ChromeOS into a unified operating system called Aluminum OS. This platform will leverage the capabilities of the Chrome browser while integrating with Android, allowing it to extend beyond mobile devices. Aluminum OS is expected to enhance user experience by supporting native Android apps within the Chrome browser. A private issue ticket revealed a video showcasing Aluminum OS's desktop view, which resembles Android's current desktop interface and includes an extensions icon. Artificial intelligence, likely powered by Google's Gemini technology, is anticipated to play a significant role in Aluminum OS. Google I/O 2026 may serve as the platform's official introduction, with hardware partners like Lenovo and Samsung expected to be showcased. Unlike ChromeOS, which already has the Google Play Store, Aluminum OS is built on Android, providing native app support and a comprehensive desktop browsing experience. This positions it as a more powerful iteration of Android, aiming to create a cohesive software experience across laptops and phones.
