AI-driven memory shortages are inflating prices and reducing specifications for consumer electronics, particularly affecting models like Apple's MacBook Neo. The era of 8GB of RAM is emerging, which poses challenges for users on Windows 11. Microsoft is focusing on reducing the memory footprint of Windows 11 for devices with 8GB of RAM, aiming to enhance memory efficiency and ensure a responsive experience. Specific optimization methods were not disclosed, but the company has made adjustments to improve the performance of essential tools and streamline the PC setup process. Microsoft is also enhancing family safety controls and voice interaction capabilities. The challenge remains to maximize performance on systems with limited RAM, especially given the current demand for AI technologies.

Major mobile carriers in Russia, including MTS, MegaFon, Beeline, and T2, have agreed to zero-rate data usage for the domestic Max messenger, effective August 1. This initiative aims to promote the state-approved platform and discourage the use of foreign messaging apps. Subscribers will have free access to voice calls, messaging, file transfers, and other services within the Max app. Since its launch in spring 2025, Max has been integrated into state digital services and mandated to be pre-installed on all smartphones sold in Russia, resulting in nearly 70 million daily active users. This announcement follows EU sanctions against VK, the app's developer, due to allegations of its connections with the Russian FSB and surveillance capabilities, leading to the removal of VK and Max from Apple and Google app stores.

Google will globally roll out its Play Signal API by the end of 2026 to enhance age assurance for younger users. The API will first be introduced in Australia and Canada by mid-August, followed by a rollout to all markets by the end of the year. This technology allows Android developers to identify younger users without accessing sensitive personal information, enabling parents to share their child's age range directly with apps. Age details will be managed through Google's Family Link parental controls dashboard, and parents must opt in to share this information. The feature is part of broader safety tools on Google Play, which include options for developers to limit children's app discovery and parental controls for managing screen time and content filters.

Microsoft's July Intune update includes enhancements for IT administrators, such as real-time monitoring of Windows device sync progress, custom compliance settings for macOS, and improved firmware update management for Samsung devices. The Intune admin center now allows real-time monitoring of sync progress for Windows devices, enabling simultaneous updates across various management aspects. Custom compliance settings for macOS enable organizations to define specific compliance requirements beyond Apple's standard checks, allowing for a unified compliance management experience across Windows, Linux, and macOS. The update also enhances Samsung Galaxy firmware management through Samsung Knox E-FOTA, allowing administrators to control firmware version deployment and update schedules. Additionally, the update clarifies that newer Windows Autopilot methods allow provisioning of Windows 11 devices without prior registration.
