The optional April 2026 update for Windows 11 (KB5083631) introduces Xbox mode, which enhances gaming performance by disabling unnecessary processes. The rollout prioritizes users in North America, followed by Europe, but many are still waiting for access. Xbox mode can be manually activated using ViVeTool, a free command-line application available on GitHub, provided users have installed update KB5083631. Xbox mode, previously known as the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE), offers a console-like interface optimized for full-screen display, enhancing readability and navigation with a gaming controller. It allows seamless transitions between productive tasks and gaming sessions, aiming to replicate the console experience on a PC.

Microsoft has acknowledged that the April 2026 security updates have disrupted the functionality of various third-party backup applications using the psmounterex.sys driver, raising concerns among users. The issue primarily affects software leveraging the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshots, leading to failures due to VSS service timeouts. Notable impacted products include Macrium Reflect, Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, UrBackup Server, and NinjaOne Backup, used on Windows 11, Windows Server, and Windows 10 devices. Disruptions can manifest as failures to mount backup image files, errors or timeouts when browsing or restoring from backup images, and error messages related to VSS timeouts. Microsoft updated its support documentation to clarify that the April updates included a security hardening change that added psmounterex.sys to the vulnerable driver blocklist to protect against a high-severity buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2023-43896). Affected users are advised to upgrade to newer application versions with updated drivers and not to uninstall or pause the security update. Users can check if the Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist is blocking a driver by looking for Event ID 3077 in the Code Integrity Operational log. Additionally, Microsoft has alerted users that some Windows Server 2025 devices may boot into BitLocker recovery mode after installing the KB5082063 update and has issued out-of-band updates to address installation failures and restart loops affecting Windows Server systems after the April 2026 updates.

The installation process for PostgreSQL can be challenging for new users due to several factors. A common issue is the requirement to set a strong password for the default 'postgres' user, which users often forget, leading to a complicated reset process. Another challenge is port conflicts, as PostgreSQL uses port 5432 by default; if another application is using this port, it complicates installation. Additionally, users must configure PostgreSQL to be included in the system PATH for command-line operations, a step that is frequently overlooked, causing frustration when executing commands.

A new course at the University of Texas at Dallas, titled Experiential Medical Reasoning, immerses premed students in a virtual hospital environment using Minecraft. The course, developed by IvyBee, Inc., allows students to engage with fictional patients and make medical decisions based on symptoms and charts. The digital replica of Parkland Memorial Hospital enables students to experience various medical roles while preparing for the MCAT. Students have reported improvements in their MCAT practice scores and gained insights into hospital operations. The course is part of a broader initiative led by Dr. Walter Voit, who aims to enhance student engagement through innovative educational tools.

Microsoft is refining Windows 11 to enhance productivity and minimize distractions. New features are being rolled out as part of the Windows Insider program, including a more configurable taskbar expected later this month. Significant improvements in File Explorer aim to reduce delays and improve responsiveness through foundational architectural enhancements. Microsoft is also rethinking the Widgets feature to create a calmer aesthetic with fewer notifications, separating Widgets from the Discover feed to reduce clutter. The updates promise a "feels faster" Windows 11, with performance tuning for frequently used applications and adjustments to the Windows scheduler for better CPU allocation. Users may notice subtle improvements in application launch times and overall system responsiveness.
