Google has expanded the call recording feature in its Phone app to include Pixel 6 and newer models. This feature allows users to record phone conversations, although it does not include transcription or automatic note-taking capabilities. Call recording is available in regions where it is legal, and users in the United States and Canada currently have access. To use the feature, users must have a Pixel 6 or newer device with Android 14 or higher, or a non-Pixel device with Android 9 or higher, and must update their Phone app. Users can activate call recording in the Phone app's settings and have options for automatic recording and deletion of recordings after a specified period. The call recorder will announce the recording to all parties involved in the call.

Security researchers from ESET discovered that 12 malicious Android chat applications, including Privee Talk, MeetMe, Let’s Chat, Quick Chat, Rafaqat رفاق, and Chit Chat, were found to covertly harvest users’ messages and deploy a remote access trojan called VajraSpy. Six of these apps were available on Google Play before being flagged for suspicious activity, resulting in approximately 1,400 downloads, primarily targeting users in India and Pakistan. The spyware could extract messages from encrypted chat platforms, record ambient sounds in real time, and intercept communications on apps like WhatsApp and Signal. The operators used honey-trap tactics to entice users into installing the apps, which requested permissions typical of espionage tools, such as RECORD_AUDIO and access to notifications and accessibility services. Users are advised to uninstall these apps and review permissions to protect against potential threats.

The rollout is expected to occur gradually throughout the year. Additionally, Scam Detection will expand to Australia, Canada, Great Britain, India, and Ireland. Call Notes will be introduced in Australia, Canada, India, and Ireland as part of a beta preview later this year. Call Screen will soon be available in Australia, Canada, and Ireland, with a beta version of Manual Call Screen for Pixel 10 users in India, supporting English and Hindi. Google is also developing a feature for users in India to translate Call Screen interactions into their preferred language. Other features highlighted include Magic Cue and Voice Translate on the Pixel 10, the Take a Message function, and a Material 3 Expressive design for the Pixel Phone app. The Favorites carousel and streamlined recent calls list aim to enhance navigation, while horizontal swipe and single-tap options for answering or declining calls improve usability.

Google is working on integrating a native Call Recording feature within its Phone app for Pixel devices. A user on the PixelUsersIndia subreddit shared a screenshot showing a new "Call Recording" setting on their Pixel 9a, which includes options to toggle recording on and off, manage recordings, and enable automatic recording for calls with non-contacts. This feature is confirmed to be compatible with Pixel 6 models and newer, running Android 9 or higher. However, it has not yet been widely rolled out, as users with Pixel 8a and Pixel 10 devices have not seen the feature. The legality of call recording varies by state, affecting its implementation. Recent reports suggest that Google may replace the audio disclaimer for recording with a subtle chime for discretion.
