New RecruitRat, SaferRat, Astrinox, Massiv Android Malware Found Targeting 800 Apps

Cybersecurity researchers from Zimperium zLabs have identified four families of Android malware—RecruitRat, SaferRat, Astrinox, and Massiv—targeting banking and cryptocurrency applications. These malware families can extract sensitive information from over 800 applications. They primarily use phishing and smishing to lure users into downloading malicious software. Phishing involves creating fake websites resembling legitimate login pages, while smishing uses urgent text messages with links to download harmful payloads. RecruitRat targets job seekers with fake employment websites, and SaferRat promises free access to premium video services. Astrinox mimics a business tool and has been linked to a fraudulent Apple App Store page, while Massiv's distribution methods remain unclear. Once installed, these malware applications initiate Overlay attacks, displaying counterfeit screens to capture user credentials. They also use a "blindfold" technique to obscure their activities by overlaying static images on the user's screen. The malware can intercept security codes, capture one-time passwords, and employ keylogging techniques. RecruitRat has a library of over 700 counterfeit login pages that activate with targeted apps. Researchers recommend avoiding links in urgent messages and downloading apps only from official sources.

MiningDropper Android Malware Exploits Lumolight App

The malware executes a series of stages, starting with decrypting an embedded asset and loading additional payloads, including a counterfeit Google Play update interface to deceive users. Two main campaign clusters have been identified: an infostealer campaign targeting Indian users by impersonating trusted entities, and a global campaign distributing the BTMOB RAT, which enables credential theft and device takeover. The final payload capabilities include extracting sensitive data, enabling full device compromise, facilitating financial fraud, and unauthorized cryptocurrency mining. Mirax RAT Targets Android Devices Through Meta Apps

Fake Claude site installs malware that gives attackers access to your computer

Claude, an AI tool developed by Anthropic, receives nearly 290 million web visits monthly and has become a target for cybercriminals. A fake website has been found that impersonates Claude, distributing a trojanized installer named Claude-Pro-windows-x64.zip. This installer, while appearing legitimate, deploys PlugX malware, granting attackers remote access to users' systems. The fraudulent site mimics the official download page and uses passive DNS records linked to commercial bulk-email platforms, indicating active maintenance by the operators. The ZIP file contains an MSI installer that incorrectly spells "Claude" as "Cluade" and creates a desktop shortcut that launches a VBScript dropper. This script runs the legitimate claude.exe while executing malicious activities in the background, including copying files to the Windows Startup folder to ensure persistence after reboot. The attack utilizes a DLL sideloading technique recognized by MITRE as T1574.002, where a legitimate G DATA antivirus updater is exploited with a malicious DLL. Within 22 seconds of execution, the malware establishes a connection to an IP address associated with Alibaba Cloud, indicating control over the compromised system. The dropper script also employs anti-forensic measures to delete itself and the VBScript after deployment. Indicators of compromise include the filenames Claude-Pro-windows-x64.zip, NOVUpdate.exe, avk.dll, and NOVUpdate.exe.dat, along with the network indicator 8.217.190.58:443 (TCP) as the command and control destination. Users are advised to download Claude only from the official site and to remain vigilant against potential compromises.
