Malwarebytes Offers US College Students 2 Years of Free Antivirus Protection

Malwarebytes is offering two years of complimentary access to its Malwarebytes Premium Security software suite for students enrolled in accredited colleges and universities in the United States. This offer is part of the Student Protection Program and is available to students aged 18 and older with a .edu or .college email address. The program includes features such as real-time malware and ransomware protection, phishing and scam detection, and ad and tracker blocking, and can be used on up to three devices. Students can verify their institution's eligibility on the Malwarebytes website and can request early access or a 50% student discount if their school is not listed. After the two-year period, students can choose to continue with a limited free version or transition to a Premium subscription.

Russian Mobile Carriers Waive Data Fees for State-Backed Max Messenger

Major mobile carriers in Russia, including MTS, MegaFon, Beeline, and T2, have agreed to zero-rate data usage for the domestic Max messenger, effective August 1. This initiative aims to promote the state-approved platform and discourage the use of foreign messaging apps. Subscribers will have free access to voice calls, messaging, file transfers, and other services within the Max app. Since its launch in spring 2025, Max has been integrated into state digital services and mandated to be pre-installed on all smartphones sold in Russia, resulting in nearly 70 million daily active users. This announcement follows EU sanctions against VK, the app's developer, due to allegations of its connections with the Russian FSB and surveillance capabilities, leading to the removal of VK and Max from Apple and Google app stores.

Xbox console players now get select Ubisoft PC versions for free via Xbox PC — it’s not Xbox Play Anywhere, but hey it’s something

Ubisoft and Microsoft have announced an extended collaboration that will allow owners of select Ubisoft titles on Xbox Series X|S to gain complimentary access to their PC counterparts, excluding those who purchased games through the Xbox PC store. Ubisoft has added over 80 games to the Xbox PC store, many of which are part of the Ubisoft+ Classics lineup included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. However, the Ubisoft Connect PC app has faced criticism for its reliability, and while some games feature progression syncing between PC and Xbox consoles, it often does not match the functionality of Xbox's Play Anywhere feature. Many gamers express frustration over Ubisoft's lack of integration of key Xbox features into their PC games.

Ubisoft Gives Free PC Copies to Xbox Owners of Select Games

Ubisoft is offering Xbox owners complimentary access to a selection of Ubisoft titles on PC through Ubisoft Connect until August 4th. The included games are: - Assassin’s Creed Mirage - Assassin’s Creed Valhalla - Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - Far Cry 6 - Immortals Fenyx Rising - Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Riders Republic - Skull and Bones - The Crew 2 - The Crew Motorfest - Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction - Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege These titles will appear in players' Ubisoft Connect library by next week if their accounts are linked. Players who purchase any of these games on Xbox will also receive access to the PC version, but not vice versa. Ubisoft has also introduced premium editions of its games to Xbox's PC app. Xbox has been integrating PC gaming, recently making select backward-compatible titles available on PC.

Welcome to the 2026 Edition of the Windows 11 Field Guide!

The Windows 11 Field Guide has been rebranded as the Windows 11 Field Guide 2026 edition, covering all supported versions of Windows 11 (24H2, 25H2, and 26H1) and highlighting new and existing features. The guide will evolve throughout 2026, with updates requiring considerable effort and likely unfolding over several editions. Outdated content has been removed, including chapters on Mail, Calendar, Microsoft 365, Movies & TV, and the Microsoft Store. Chapters have been consolidated for clarity, with three upgrade chapters merged into one and four installation chapters also consolidated. New chapters have been added on Microsoft Paint, Notepad, Quick Machine Recovery, and account security basics. Existing chapters, such as those on Desktop and Passkeys, are being revised. The focus has shifted from assisting users transitioning from Windows 10 to supporting the over one billion Windows 11 users, with all "Where did it go?" sections eliminated. Visuals have been refined to optimize file sizes, and a new companion book, De-Enshittify Windows 11, has been created. Future editions will be year-based rather than version-based, with free updates for existing owners through the release of Windows 11 version 26H2 in late 2026. Thurrott Premium members will have complimentary access to the 2026 edition.

Popular VPN app can empty your bank accounts, security experts warn

Cybersecurity researchers have identified a dangerous Android malware disguised as the Mobdro Pro IP TV + VPN app, which has already affected over 3,000 devices in Europe. The malware, known as Klopatra, gains remote control of infected devices by exploiting Android Accessibility Services, allowing cybercriminals to access users' bank accounts. The app prompts users to grant permissions that facilitate the attack, and it is suspected to originate from a Turkish-speaking group. Cleafy estimates around 1,000 individuals have been affected, raising concerns that other criminal organizations may replicate this scheme, complicating detection efforts.

Russia enforces Max messenger app on all new devices

The Kremlin plans to evolve Max into a national "super app" by integrating communication, payments, and administrative functions, with a mandatory pre-installation on devices sold in Russia starting January 1, 2026. Smart TVs sold in Russia will also come pre-installed with Lime HD TV for free access to Russian state television. The app faces restrictions alongside messaging services like WhatsApp and Telegram, which have been blocked due to national security concerns. Max is being promoted as a successor to VK Messenger, with directives issued for public institutions to transition to Max by November. Despite promotional efforts, users have reported technical difficulties and privacy concerns, as the app collects extensive user data. Google’s new AI video generator is free for Gemini users, but not for long

Google is offering all Gemini users free access to its Veo 3 AI video generator until August 24 at 10 p.m. PT. Users can create up to three eight-second video clips during this promotional period, which includes auto-generated sound. To use Veo 3, users can access it through the Gemini app on mobile or web by selecting the Video option or finding it in the three-dot menu.
