RTS IS BACK! The Best Upcoming Real-Time Strategy (RTS) Games of 2026-2027

The real-time strategy (RTS) genre, which thrived in the late 90s and early 2000s, experienced a decline from the late 2000s until around 2015 but is expected to make a comeback in 2026 and 2027. Anticipated titles include Stronghold 4, ZeroSpace, D.O.R.F., Dawn of War IV, and Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Bergfried, developed by Quid Pro Games, is a medieval strategy game that combines castle-building mechanics, town management, and real-time combat, with a unique grid reflecting European castle shapes. Panzer Strike, by ISAK Team, aims to recapture the essence of late 90s RTS games and is set for release in Q3 2026. Falling Frontier, a procedurally generated space RTS, is highly wishlisted on Steam and promises detailed ship combat. Chronicles: Medieval, releasing in 2026, offers a sandbox strategy experience during the Hundred Years’ War, blending free-roaming gameplay with large-scale battles. Dinolords, developed by Northplay, features a medieval world with armored dinosaurs and allows players to control dinosaur-riding Lords, presenting a unique twist on traditional RTS gameplay.

One of my favorite Warhammer 40,000 books is getting an unexpected sequel

Games Workshop has shifted its focus to explore the perspectives of various alien species in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Notable works include "Ghazghkull Thraka: Prophet of the Waaagh" for ork fans and "Voidscarred" for those interested in aeldari pirates. The novel "The Infinite and the Divine" by Robert Rath centers on the rivalry between two necrons, Orikan the Diviner and Trazyn the Infinite, who clash over an artifact and face various challenges, including confrontations with Exodite armies and xenos uprisings. Orikan and Trazyn will return in the upcoming title "The Wicked and the Warped," where they must collaborate to uncover the fate of a lost expedition on a Chaos-tainted planet. A reprint of "The Infinite and the Divine" in hardback format is forthcoming, and its audiobook version has received positive reviews.

Dawn of War 2’s The Last Stand mode is still the best co-op MOBA that never was

Comp stomp is a cooperative gaming mode where players team up against AI opponents, but it often lacks genuine strategy due to the AI's limitations. The Last Stand from Dawn of War 2, launched in 2009, offers an alternative experience by placing players in a scenario with a single commander unit facing waves of aliens. Although the standalone version on Steam is no longer available, it can be accessed through the Dawn of War 2: Anniversary Edition. The Last Stand simplifies gameplay by removing traditional base-building and research, focusing on tactical skirmishes. Players can unlock various wargear that alters their playstyle, allowing for diverse strategies. The mode features a variety of playable factions, each with unique heroes and abilities. Despite newer titles, The Last Stand remains popular for its engaging gameplay. Fans are eager to see how it will be integrated into the upcoming Dawn of War 4.

Silent Hill: Townfall will release in September alongside a handful of other blockbuster games hellbent on avoiding GTA 6

The release date for Silent Hill: Townfall is September 24. It follows the revival of the franchise with Silent Hill f nearly a year prior. In September, several other notable titles will also be released, including Blood of the Dawnwalker on September 3, Marvel's Wolverine on September 15, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 on September 18, Control Resonant on September 24, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword on September 25.

Dawn of War 2 review (2009)

40K XCOM-like Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is getting a sequel and this time we’ll get to purge ‘seven distinctive enemy factions’

In 1998, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate was released as a turn-based tactics game featuring the Ultramarines and Chaos. In 2022, Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters was launched, focusing on the Grey Knights and their battle against Chaos, drawing inspiration from the XCOM series. Daemonhunters received feedback regarding limited enemy diversity, primarily featuring Nurgle's minions. A sequel is announced to introduce seven distinct enemy factions. The Warhammer Skulls showcase revealed updates including a release date and DLC roadmap for Dawn of War 4, a new Skitarii class for Darktide, a platformer with a ratman protagonist, and tiger warrior DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3. Updates will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Dawn of War 4 just got a release date (or 2), a DLC roadmap, and Crusade Mode plans

Dawn of War 4 is set to be released on September 17, with early access for the Commander Edition available on September 14. The Commander Edition includes advanced access and additional downloadable content, such as a story prologue, a campaign expansion, and a new faction. The Blood Ravens Story Prologue follows a Blood Ravens strike force returning to their homeworld of Aurelia.
