Tor VPN Beta brings isolated app-by-app Tor routing to Android

The Tor Project has launched Tor VPN Beta for Android, allowing mobile applications to route traffic through the Tor network, expanding beyond web browsing. This development was driven by user demand for privacy tools to bypass internet censorship, particularly in restrictive regions. The concept originated in 2021, and after initial testing and user feedback, the beta was announced on September 9. Tor VPN creates a separate Tor circuit for each application, enhancing privacy by complicating activity correlation across apps. Users can select which applications use Tor, and the interface has been improved for easier management. The beta version 1.4.0 includes support for WebTunnel bridges to disguise Tor connections as standard encrypted traffic. Usability testing revealed issues with exit-node selection, leading to a design change that requires users to connect to Tor before choosing an exit. Tor VPN is built on the Arti implementation of the Tor protocol and the Onionmasq networking layer, ensuring stability and component sharing. The software supports reproducible builds and is available via F-Droid and APK downloads. A security review in June 2025 found no major flaws but identified some issues being addressed. Tor VPN is currently in beta and focuses on enhancing circumvention capabilities and usability rather than competing with commercial VPNs on speed. Users in censored areas are advised to configure bridges for access.

Gemini could take a leaf out of ChatGPT’s book for this design update

The Google Gemini app is testing a new camera interface in version 17.55.8, which will allow the viewfinder to occupy half of the screen while keeping chat contents visible. This design is inspired by the ChatGPT mobile app and includes a floating viewfinder, a handle for expanding or minimizing the viewfinder, and a redesigned camera shutter key. The camera switcher will be relocated to the three-dot menu. Additionally, the '@' menu is being revamped to potentially hide disabled apps and may be renamed "Connectors," featuring a wider layout and an option to "Connect apps." The Avatars section will allow users to showcase existing avatars and add new ones. These updates are currently in testing and may not be rolled out to the public.

Android Auto to get a major design change, widgets, better music apps

At the Google I/O 2026 event, Google introduced an updated version of Android Auto, featuring a new design that adapts to various display sizes and supports widgets. The interface will utilize the Material 3 Expressive design, allowing personalized fonts and wallpapers from Galaxy phones. A floating app row will be positioned based on the steering wheel's location, and the interface will overlay Google Maps for integrated navigation. The updated Android Auto can display air conditioning controls if supported by the vehicle and allows users to place widgets like Clock, Contacts, Google Home, Photos, and Weather on the infotainment screen. It will also support video streaming from platforms like YouTube when parked, with Full HD resolution and up to 60fps. This feature will be available in select vehicles from manufacturers including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. The music streaming interface will be redesigned with tabs at the top and will support Dolby Atmos in compatible vehicles. Popular music streaming services like Amazon Music, Gaana, PocketFM, Spotify, TuneIn, and YouTube Music will adopt this new design, with functionalities depending on device compatibility.

Microsoft just made Windows 11’s Drag Tray for sharing files less annoying, and it actually works now

Microsoft has introduced the Drop Tray in Windows 11, replacing the previous Drag Tray to enhance file sharing. The Drop Tray features a more compact design and aims to minimize accidental openings while being easily dismissible. It is expected to roll out to all Windows 11 PCs by May as part of a set of reliability fixes. The new design encourages users to engage with it intentionally for file sharing, improving usability for those with desktop folders. The option to enable or disable the Drop Tray can now be found under Settings > System > Multitasking > Drop Tray.

Microsoft extends security patching for three Windows products at a price

Support for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB will end on October 13, 2026, while Windows Server 2016 will reach its end of support on January 12, 2027. Organizations using these products will receive one final monthly security update on the specified dates, after which they will not receive security patches, updates, or technical support. The Extended Security Updates (ESU) program allows organizations to purchase coverage for up to three years beyond the end of support, with pricing starting at a specified amount per device for the first year and doubling for each subsequent year. Windows Server 2016's ESU pricing has not been announced, and Microsoft recommends upgrading to newer Long-Term Servicing Channel releases. In the European Economic Area, Windows 10 users can access ESU until October 14, 2026, without payment or cloud account requirements due to advocacy from Euroconsumers.

Google Photos could finally fix one of its most frustrating sharing hurdles

Google Photos is introducing a "Copy" button in the share sheet, allowing users to copy images directly into other applications without prior downloads. This feature, available in version v7.63.0.867680147, enables users to paste full-resolution images with slight compression into existing messages. Users can only copy one image at a time, consistent with standard copy-paste behavior on Android. Additionally, Google Photos is receiving a Material 3 Expressive redesign for its Backup settings, with updates to the Album screen and the Updates section to enhance usability and aesthetics.

Microsoft Sounds Windows 11 And Server Update Failure Alarm

Microsoft has confirmed that users of Windows 11 and Windows Server are experiencing authentication failures due to updates released on or after August 29. This issue, detailed in Microsoft Support posting KB5070568, is linked to duplicate Security IDs (SIDs) on devices, affecting Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, as well as Windows Server 2025. The problem arises from new security protections that enforce checks on SIDs, which are necessary to maintain user account integrity and prevent unauthorized access. Duplicate SIDs typically result from unsupported cloning or duplication of a Windows installation without using the Sysprep tool. The recent update mandates SID uniqueness, blocking authentication handshakes between devices with duplicate SIDs. To resolve this, users must rebuild their devices using supported methods for cloning or duplicating a Windows installation to ensure unique SIDs.
