At the recent Google I/O 2026 event, the tech giant showcased an exciting evolution of Android Auto, designed to enhance the driving experience through innovative features and a fresh aesthetic. The updated version promises to adapt seamlessly to any display size and shape, introducing support for widgets and a revamped user interface for music player applications.
Material 3 Expressive Design
The new Android Auto will embrace the Material 3 Expressive design philosophy, allowing users to enjoy personalized fonts and wallpapers from their Galaxy phones directly on their car’s infotainment display. This update also includes smoother animations, enhancing the overall user experience.
The app row will be presented as a floating bar, strategically positioned on the left or right side of the screen, depending on the steering wheel’s location. Notably, the entire Android Auto interface—including the app drawer, notifications, apps, and widgets—will overlay Google Maps, providing a cohesive and integrated navigation experience.
In a significant enhancement, the updated Android Auto can also display air conditioning controls, provided the vehicle supports this feature. Users will have the ability to place various widgets from their phones onto the car’s infotainment screen, facilitating quicker access to essential functions. Among the showcased widgets are Clock, Contacts, Google Home, Photos, and Weather.
For those with phones equipped with Gemini Intelligence, related features will also be integrated into Android Auto, further enriching the user experience.
Video Streaming Capabilities
A standout feature of the new Android Auto is its support for video applications. When parked, users will be able to stream videos from platforms like YouTube and other services directly on their car’s infotainment screen, with support for Full HD resolution and frame rates up to 60fps in compatible apps. Notably, if a video is playing when the vehicle begins to move, the audio will continue to play, ensuring an uninterrupted listening experience.
This functionality will initially be available in select vehicles from a range of manufacturers, including:
- BMW
- Ford
- Genesis
- Hyundai
- Kia
- Mahindra
- Mercedes-Benz
- Renault
- Škoda
- Tata
- Volvo
Revamped Music Streaming Experience
The music streaming interface will also undergo a significant redesign, with tabs now appearing at the top of the screen instead of the side. Google is providing developers with additional design templates, allowing for greater flexibility and visual fidelity in app design. This will enable a more engaging user experience with enhanced spotlight content and varied grid item options.
Music player applications will feature an adaptive mini player, allowing users to browse for new music while keeping controls readily accessible. This new design will soon be adopted by several popular music streaming services, including:
- Amazon Music
- Gaana
- PocketFM
- Spotify
- TuneIn
- YouTube Music
Additionally, Android Auto will support Dolby Atmos in compatible vehicles, starting with select models from BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. These features will be available to Galaxy phone users, though specific functionalities will depend on individual device compatibility and hardware capabilities.
