Text: On October 15, Ledger unveiled its latest innovation, the “Atom,” a phone-shaped crypto cold wallet designed to enhance security in the digital currency landscape. This device allows Android-based applications to operate on a distinct system, separate from the one that authorizes transactions. Interested customers can now place reservations, with deliveries anticipated in 2027. This announcement arrives amid Ledger's ongoing efforts to address concerns regarding compromised devices that have surfaced in Southeast Asia. The Atom aims to provide an additional layer of protection against physical tampering, ensuring users can transact with confidence. Everyday apps, separate transaction approvals According to Ledger, everyday applications will function independently from the secure environment that safeguards users’ private keys. When a transaction requires approval, the device's security system takes over the display, illuminating an indicator to signal that users have entered this protected mode. This design empowers individuals to verify their actions rather than relying solely on information presented by standard applications. Moreover, the Atom features a physical switch that allows users to disable the camera and microphone, further enhancing privacy and security. Ledger updates its account of the thefts In light of recent events, Ledger has provided clarity regarding the thefts reported by AMBCrypto on October 9. The company explained that criminals may have acquired legitimate devices, modified them with hidden components, and subsequently returned them to the distribution network through resellers. These components were engineered to capture users' recovery phrases during the registration process, granting access to their wallets for anyone possessing that critical information. Despite these incidents, Ledger asserts that its crypto hardware, operating platform, and servers remain secure from hacking attempts. In response to the situation, the company has temporarily suspended its reseller and distributor sales channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. The Atom is designed with a protective shield to detect any interference with its secure components, reinforcing Ledger's commitment to user safety. Reservations open, but shipping comes later For those interested in the Atom, Ledger has introduced a Founders Edition priced at 9, which can be reserved with a fully refundable deposit of 0. It is important to note that the product is still under development, and aspects such as pricing may be subject to change prior to its official launch. At this stage, the Atom represents Ledger’s vision of integrating everyday applications with hardware-based transaction approval, marking a significant step forward in the realm of crypto security.
