Google updates Android earthquake alerts with more info, expands to 200+ regions

Google is enhancing its Android earthquake alerts system, a significant update that promises to provide users with more comprehensive information and broaden its reach to over 200 regions worldwide.

Since its inception in 2021, the earthquake alerts system has utilized the sensors embedded in Android smartphones to detect the initial tremors of an earthquake, offering users a crucial few seconds of warning before the full force of the quake is felt. Despite experiencing a few technical glitches, the system has proven to be life-saving, with Google reporting that it has dispatched over a billion alerts to date.

As of today, the Android earthquake alerts system is operational in more than 200 regions, a substantial increase from the previous count of 98. Notably, Panama and Guatemala have been added to the list of supported locations.

In addition to expanding its geographical coverage, Google is also revamping the design of its earthquake alerts. The “Be Ready” alert will now provide enhanced details regarding the earthquake’s epicenter and its estimated magnitude.

  • Be Aware: A straightforward alert indicating light shaking, informing users that an earthquake has been detected nearby.
  • Be Ready: A more detailed alert for stronger shaking, advising users to prepare for potential action.
  • Take Action: A full-screen alert for moderate to heavy shaking, offering immediate safety advice.

Google has elaborated on the enhancements to the “Be Ready” alert, which will soon feature a map displaying the radius of detected shaking, the estimated magnitude of the earthquake, actionable steps for safety, and a button for users to access further information as it becomes available.
