Google updates Android earthquake alerts with more info, expands to 200+ regions

Google is enhancing its Android earthquake alerts system, expanding its reach to over 200 regions worldwide, up from 98. The system, which has been operational since 2021, uses sensors in Android smartphones to detect initial tremors and has sent over a billion alerts. New locations added include Panama and Guatemala. The “Be Ready” alert will now provide more detailed information, including the earthquake's epicenter, estimated magnitude, a map of detected shaking, safety steps, and a button for further information. The alert system includes three types: "Be Aware" for light shaking, "Be Ready" for stronger shaking, and "Take Action" for moderate to heavy shaking.

After Valve was criticized, devs back Steam’s refund policy by creating a 2-hour game literally called Refund This Game: “We celebrate players’ right to refund”

Mateo Covic, a developer known for Paddle Paddle Paddle, expressed frustrations about Steam's two-hour refund window, sparking scrutiny of Valve's policy. In response, developers launched a game titled Refund This Game, a first-person platformer that challenges players to navigate Steam's refund policy. The game encourages players to complete it in under two hours to earn a refund. It is priced at a promotional rate and takes inspiration from the classic rage-inducing platformer Getting Over It. Co-developer dofhouse noted that the discussion around Steam's refund policy inspired the game. Additionally, Steam recently surpassed 43 million concurrent users, an all-time high, attributed to the popularity of titles like Wardogs and Deadlock.

Windows 11 October updates fix zero-day, VPN failures, and black screens

Microsoft released its October 2026 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11, addressing 1,413 vulnerabilities, including a critical fix for an exploited Windows Shell vulnerability (CVE-2026-96951) that bypasses Mark of the Web defenses. This update is the last monthly security update for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro users, who must upgrade to a supported version for future security fixes. The update packages KB5127648 and KB5127646 cover versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2, and also include fixes for reliability issues such as Explorer.exe startup failures, VPN connection problems, and gaming mouse stuttering. Additionally, the update resolves issues with AC-3 playback, printing failures, and fingerprint sign-in failures after a cold boot. Users are advised to install the updates promptly and restart their systems to complete the process.

YouTube bringing automatic background play to Android Automotive cars

Google is enhancing the Android Automotive experience with app updates under the “Google built-in” initiative, introducing more video applications and allowing YouTube to operate in the background for Premium subscribers. Over the next few weeks, vehicles with Android Automotive will see a redesigned Play Store tailored for various display sizes and improved app discoverability, with over 700 applications currently available. New apps like STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King, and JioHotstar are expected to launch soon. Background play for YouTube allows drivers to enjoy video content while parked and switch to audio playback while driving. Although initially announced for 2025, this is the first direct mention of the feature for YouTube. Android Auto is also anticipated to support video applications and background play capabilities in the future.

Android Auto 18.0 update starts rolling out, continues to gear up for redesign

Google is working on a redesign of Android Auto, codenamed “Cielo,” as it rolls out Android Auto 18.0 in beta. This update is primarily a maintenance patch focused on bug fixes and stability improvements, with no significant new features. A recent teardown revealed an asset named “cielolauncher,” suggesting it will replace the previous dashboard redesign known as “Coolwalk.” Previous updates have indicated potential new screen layouts and support for widgets. The name “Cielo,” meaning “sky” in Italian and Spanish, may imply a theme of openness. The current update builds on the existing redesign framework, with no immediate plans for a full rollout of new features, and remnants of the “Coolwalk” codename remain in the code.

Someone ported Pixel 11’s Rambler voice-to-text to other Android phones

Google's Pixel 11 and the Googlebook feature the Rambler voice-to-text functionality, which uses AI to improve traditional voice-to-text capabilities by refining spoken words into coherent text with proper grammar and formatting. Rambler is currently exclusive to the Pixel 11 series, but a developer has ported it to other Android devices through an app called "PixelBoard," a modified version of Gboard. Users can sideload this app from GitHub, but they should proceed at their own risk. Testing on a Galaxy Z Fold 8 showed that the app functions effectively, similar to Rambler on the Pixel 11. It is unclear if Google will extend Rambler support to other devices, and alternatives like Microsoft’s SwiftKey are available on the Play Store.

We Got a $240,000 Estimate for Agent API Access. Our Agent Suggested a $5 Postgres Instance.

The operational landscape at SaaStr has changed significantly with the integration of AI, particularly with the AI VP of Revenue, 10K, which manages most outbound, inbound, and revenue operations and executes 35,000 to 40,000 API calls daily. Salesforce, Atlassian, and HubSpot are now charging for agent access, with estimates suggesting that maintaining 10K could cost around 0,000 annually. 10K has proposed mirroring the system of record into a Postgres database to reduce API call costs. Previous limitations with Marketo restricted API access to 10 or 20 minutes daily, prompting a migration away from it. The cloud index has risen by 18%, while vendors relying solely on per-seat sales are struggling. Data shows that 49.7% of executives changed jobs in the last 16 months, with 63% of CMOs doing the same. Additionally, more than 75% of AI-native attendees at SaaStr events had never attended before. 10K is now tracking its own API calls and reducing unnecessary ones, while a Postgres mirror is being considered for vendors with high agent pricing. Muse is being tested for ad capabilities against Claude and Replit.
